NELSON BY THE SEASON

Situated at the tip of the South Island, Nelson is a wonderful year-round destination. Most years, we come out on top as the country’s sunniest spot, making us a popular destination even in winter, when other places are drenched in rain or blanketed in snow. The staff at Palazzo Motor Lodge are enthusiastic about travellers in every season, and here’s why.

Summer

Coming to Nelson in summer is a bit of a no-brainer. We have cycle trails and coastal walks and our restaurants have sunny outdoor dining featuring meals that make the most of our fresh summer produce. But, among our motel’s guests, the most popular reason to visit Nelson in summer is to take advantage of our unique location as the gateway to the gorgeous Abel Tasman. Just make sure to book your motel accommodation in advance, as this is the busy season!

Autumn

Among staff at our Nelson motel accommodaton, autumn is probably the preferred season. Being in the South Island, Nelson is lucky to feature many deciduous trees with leaves that change from green to auburn, brilliant red to golden-yellow before falling to the ground. The rainbow of natural colours that will transfix you in Nelson’s autumn season isn’t as common in the subtropical north.

Autumn is also a wonderful time to explore the outdoors with more stamina. You can cycle longer when you aren’t baking in the midday heat. You can kayak without crisping under the sun. And you can enjoy the relative quiet and lower motel accommodation prices that the off-season offers.

Winter

There are those who like to hibernate in winter, and those who like to explore. If you are one of the latter, consider Nelson as your winter travel destination. We have mild winters and there is still plenty of sunshine to allow for lovely nature walks, biking and city exploration.

Visiting Nelson in winter is a great time to get to know the city’s arts and culture scene, as well as tour our many museums and historical sights. If there’s a sunny but brisk day, take a day trip out of Nelson, starting at your motel and making your way up the coast, visiting the region’s quaint towns like Motueka and Takaka.

Spring

Everything comes back to life in spring and we certainly see a revival in the life blood of Nelson city. As the weather warms and the days lengthen, spring is a beautiful time of year and the perfect season to explore the Tasman Bay by kayak. Spring also coincides with the start of mussel season, so head into Marlborough one day for a delicious mussel lunch at Blenheim’s famous Mussel Inn.
